"30 in 30" Collage

If you count the actual pics, you will see that I produced 20 paintings in 30 days. I am okay with that as my goal was painting everyday. I did! Thank you for your support! I have some shows and commissions to attend to now but I will probably be painting everyday.

Day 30; Barking Sands Sky

6x6
acrylic on gessoed panel

I woke up early this morning thinking today was the day we put together our collage for the "30 in 30" challenge. Not true, tomorrow that will be the case. I had to hustle a subject that I thought I could do before work. I had this in my iPad and I think my friend Diane sent it to me. This is probably my most favorite beach in Hawaii. Its on Kauai, on the west side...sand for days. That is Niihau in the distance. I would classify this as a study, not good enough for prime time. There is an artist, actually she is my cousin by marriage, who does fantastic skies with encaustics. Check out Kari's work at www.daisysky.com. She also did the "30 in 30" challenge.

Grandma's Values

6x6
gessoed panel
Yet another cutesy title for Stanley to harass me on. It will make for good conversation in our next class. This is my grandma, Eva Bealer. After painting Lincoln yesterday, I remembered that my uncle had e-mailed me this picture of her. She was a hard working woman who had 7 children, most of whom started off in life speaking German. BTW, that is why my name is spelled how it is...using the german spelling for "Kathy". Anyway before going off on too long of a tangent here, I think of this as a 2 value painting. There are some midtones that define features but they are a slight shift. As I stand back away from the picture that is what I see. I could paint on this more, as  I see several corrections but I promised myself I would get to work at a normal start time.

Lincoln's Values

6x6
acrylic on panel
I can hear my instructor Stanley saying to me "No cutesy titles allowed". I couldn't help myself Stanley. As I was painting this, besides hearing my own voice saying this is too dark or that shape is off...I was thinking, here is a man who really didn't have the time or didn't care about smoothing down his hair or making his tie straight. He had more important things to attend to.

Snowscape

6x6
gessoed panel

I finished this, this morning before heading off to work. This is for the DPW challenge "The Snow Challenge". I put the moon in because I felt like the sky needed something. I am not sure it works on not? Any opinions? I didn't want it to detract from the landscape but at the same time I wanted to add some interest up there. I had fun painting the blue shadows.

Oh, and BTW, it is Day 27 in the "30 in 30" Challenge.

Red Toned Horse

6x6
acrylic on panel

Today's inspiration comes from my niece Aimee. She runs a pet care business and does photography. Can you imagine how lucky I am? This is from one of her photos.

Today is Day 26 of the "30 in 30" challenge. I won't guarantee that I will have 4 more paintings by the 30th but I will be painting...we'll see.

Greta is Blue

6x6
acrylic on cradled panel

I wasn't sure what I wanted to paint today, so I panned through the older challenges on the DPW site and found this one..."The Limited Movie Star Challenge". As instructed, I used Manganese Blue with some purple and ultra marine blue for darker value shifts. Thank you for visiting, unlike Greta "I don't want to be alone, I just don't want to be alone".

This is my submission for the DPW's "Creative Color" challenge created by Patti Vincent. I love purple. This was created by using ultramarine blue, quinacridone magenta, indian yellow and titanium white. This is also my submission for the day 24 in the "30 in 30" challenge.

Pink Roses on Table

6x6
acrylic on cradled panel

I really had wanted to paint yesterday. I went into work thinking I would be there for just an hour but.... Anyway, I got to paint this morning and I did accomplish some important tasks yesterday that were helpful.I think I appreciate painting more when I have to create time for it, like this morning.

Thoughtful

6x6
acrylic on cradled panel
Its day 18 of the "30 in 30" challenge. I'm still painting everyday. I think this will actually be my 11th painting for the event. I work 2 jobs, not that I am making excuses, but I think I am okay with not producing a painting every single day. I have to sleep sometime, right?

Attentive

6x6
acrylic

Today is Day 15 in the "30 in 30" Challenge. I have worked on this for the past 2 mornings and just now called it quits.
I saw the Hockney show at the DeYoung and the Anders Zorn at the Legion of Honor yesterday. Both shows were impressive but I have to say Hockney is energizing. He has never stopped exploring and creating art. He has done some incredible iPad paintings. I don't have the time but if I could I would go back and study his work more. It is interesting to see the art journeys of others. I have a long way to go but I am enjoying the process myself :)

Class

12x12
acrylic on linen
Here is another painting that I had around and wasn't sure I would ever finish. That critique class I take with Tim Horn really helps. Tim always has good suggestions and so do the other students. The feedback gave me some thoughts on what to do to complete this puppy. So thanks to everyone there! By the way, this is Tim teaching at the Moore ranch in Marin. My friend Sylvie is in the foreground with her back to us. (First Place 2014 Tracy Art League Expressions Show and SOLD)

Copying Peggi Kroll Roberts for Tim Horn

6x8
acrylic
I am currently in a monthly critique group lead by Tim Horn. This Tuesday, I turn in my assignment for review. We were to pick a painting that we wanted to paint like. I have taken from Peggi for awhile now but before I ever met her, I fell in love with "Figure with Beach Hat" Oil on Canvas, 18x24. I asked Peggi if she minded that I not only painted one of her paintings but if she cared if I posted...she is such a generous spirit. So thanks Peggi! This is my amateurish attempt at trying to paint like you!

In October, Brenda Ferguson posted  "The Busy Bee" challenge on dailypaintworks.com. So 3 months later I finally created the time to paint for it! And it is Day 4 of the "30 in 30" challenge created by Leslie Saeta.

Lukas

 6x6
acrylic
Lukas is long overdue. Thank you for your patience Tim! This is my first completed painting of the new year. I will admit that I did a first pass on it sometime ago.

I am going to participate in the "30 in 30" challenge this month. I am not committing to 30 paintings though. I have decided that I can commit to painting everyday for 30 days...let's see how many paintings I can do!
